Delete your Tetracom identity and data
This section explains how to delete your identity in the Tetracom app, operated by TETRACOM LLC, and what happens to your data.
In the Android app
Use either path. Older versions of the app say Remove this identity (top of the screen) or Remove (Settings) instead of Delete identity.
From the top of the main screen (deletes the identity you are using now):
- Tap the account icon (a person in a circle) at the top of the screen.
- Tap Delete identity.
- Tap Delete identity again to confirm.
From Settings (works for any identity on the phone):
- Tap the gear icon at the top of the screen to open Settings.
- Scroll to Identities.
- Under the identity, tap Delete identity.
- Tap Delete identity again to confirm.
When you confirm, the app first asks our server to delete your identity, and our server deletes it. Only then does the app remove the identity from your phone.
- If our server cannot be reached (for example, no internet), or does not confirm the deletion, the app shows Couldn’t delete identity and keeps the identity, on your phone and on our server. Tap Retry when you are online again. You can instead tap Remove from this phone only: the identity then stays on our server, and the app can no longer delete it, so e-mail us as described below.
- Older versions of the app remove the identity from your phone even when the request does not reach our server, and you can then no longer delete it from the app. If that happened, or you are not sure it worked, e-mail us as described below.
- Some older versions show a message saying the server still knows your userid. That message is out of date: the app does ask our server to delete your identity.
In the iOS app
This deletes the identity you are using now:
- Tap the gear icon to open Settings.
- Scroll to Danger zone and tap Delete account on server….
- Type your userid, then tap Delete your userid permanently.
The app first tries to send each of your contacts an encrypted notice that your identity was deleted. Contacts who are offline at that moment do not receive it, because deleting your identity also deletes messages still waiting for delivery. It then asks our server to delete your identity, and our server deletes it. The app then removes the identity from its list. If the request fails, the app shows an error and keeps the identity, so you can try again.
In the Web App
In the Web App, Identity → Remove identity removes the identity from that browser only. It does not delete it from our server. To delete it from our server:
- Write down your userid and display name (shown on the Identity tab).
- Turn notifications off in the Web App, if they are on. This deletes your push address from our server.
- E-mail us as described below.
By e-mail, or if you no longer have the phone
E-mail help@tetracom.me from any address. Include your userid and your display name (handle), and ask us to delete your identity. We will reply to confirm, and complete the deletion within 30 days.
What is deleted
Deleting your identity removes from our server:
- your identity record: userid, display name, date of birth, public keys, settings and terms record;
- your contacts and contact requests, parent links, blocks, invites you created, and your channel and team memberships (and channels and teams you own);
- team invitations you sent or received;
- encrypted messages waiting for delivery to or from you;
- message records where you are the sender or the recipient;
- ad view and tap records with your userid (and your location rounded to about 1 km, if location-based ads were on);
- your Web App push address;
- records of notices to a business integration that name you.
Invites you used are kept, with your userid removed. After deletion your userid is free, and someone else can register it.
What is kept
- Reports you filed, and reports about you, with your userid removed. A report can still contain the details or message excerpt the reporter sent.
- Server logs. Logs written by earlier versions of the server may also contain the date of birth you gave when you registered. There is no fixed retention period for logs yet.
- Database backups and copies. There is no fixed retention period for them yet.
- Copies on other people’s devices, such as messages you sent them and your entry in their contacts.
Deleted data may remain in logs and backups until those are removed. We are updating Tetracom to delete more of this data.
Data on your own device
- Android: deleting an identity removes its record and its message history from the app. Some other files for that identity, such as received voice clips and the SOS log, stay until you uninstall the app or clear its storage (Android Settings → Apps → Tetracom → Storage).
- iOS: deleting an identity removes it from the app’s list and deletes its RSA keys. Some other data for that identity, such as its contact list and its X25519 key, stays on the phone.
- Web App: to remove everything, clear the site data for tetracom.me in your browser.
Advertisers and sign-up forms
There is no way yet to delete an advertiser account, or an entry from the advertiser form or the waiting lists, yourself. E-mail help@tetracom.me from the address you used and ask us to delete it.
Report abuse or a safety problem
Report someone in the Android app: open the contact and tap Report their name. Choose what the problem is (for example spam, harassment, or child safety), add details if you want (up to 1,000 characters), and tap Send report. Also block this user is ticked by default. The report goes to the people who run Tetracom. The Privacy Policy explains what a report stores and how long it is kept.
Or e-mail help@tetracom.me (in the iOS app and the Web App, this is the way to report). Include the userid of the person involved, what happened, and when. Messages are end-to-end encrypted, so we cannot read them; describe what was sent.
Block someone in the app: open the contact and tap Block (in the Android app, Block their name). Their messages to you are dropped, they are not told, and they are removed from your contacts. Tap Unblock on the same screen to undo.
Privacy
